In the age of social media, riders are inundated with varying opinions and techniques, each claiming to unlock the secret to better riding. One social media content creator has recently highlighted the "chair position," characterised by a tilted back pelvis and legs positioned forward, suggesting it as the best option for human conformation. While this stance may initially appear comfortable and relaxed for some riders, it’s essential to dive deeper into the implications it has for both rider and horse by understanding that human conformation isn't fixed like that of horses.
In horses, conformation is largely determined by genetics—characteristics like shoulder angles and leg structure are set in stone. In contrast, human conformation can change with training, strength, and awareness. While pelvic angles and long bone lengths may differ between individuals, conditions like hip dysplasia, knock knees, or scoliosis don’t significantly impact most riders. Instead, factors such as environment, habits, experience, pain, and injuries play a crucial role in human alignment and movement.
The good news? Many of these factors can often be changed and improved, unlike a horse’s genetic conformation. As riders, it’s vital not to assume that your position in the saddle is fixed or that settling into a “comfortable” position will lead to improvement.
Aiming for a neutral pelvis and spine, aligned with the shoulder-hip-heel line, while maintaining a relaxed yet controlled posture is essential.

The Importance of Hip-Shoulder-Heel Alignment
Achieving proper hip-shoulder-heel alignment is not merely a matter of aesthetics or comfort; it is fundamental for effective riding. When your legs are positioned forward in a chair-like stance, you may find it challenging to deliver clear, precise leg aids. This misalignment can lead to confusion for your horse, resulting in sluggish responses in transitions and lateral movements.
To improve this, it’s crucial to address the underlying causes, including foot position, leg strength, pelvis alignment, and habitual patterns. Engaging in targeted exercises—both on and off the horse—can significantly enhance your riding effectiveness. By focusing on these aspects, you not only improve your own performance but also create a more harmonious partnership with your horse.
Embrace the challenge of aligning your body correctly, and you'll unlock the potential for a more responsive and enjoyable riding experience. Your journey towards optimal riding posture begins with you!
